What Is a Pip in Forex? How to Calculate Pip Value for Every Pair
A pip — short for “percentage in point” — is the smallest standard price movement in forex. Understanding pips is essential for calculating risk, setting stop losses, and measuring trade performance.
What Is a Pip?
For most currency pairs, a pip equals 0.0001 (one ten-thousandth). For JPY pairs (USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, etc.), a pip equals 0.01 (one hundredth).
| Instrument | Pip Size | Example |
|---|---|---|
| EUR/USD, GBP/USD | 0.0001 | 1.1050 → 1.1051 = +1 pip |
| USD/JPY, EUR/JPY | 0.01 | 152.50 → 152.51 = +1 pip |
| XAU/USD (Gold) | 0.01 | 2345.00 → 2345.01 = +1 pip |
| Indices (US30, NASDAQ) | Varies | Check broker specs |
Some brokers offer fractional pips (5 decimal places for most pairs, 3 for JPY), called pipettes. A pipette is one-tenth of a pip.
How to Calculate Pip Value
Pip value depends on three factors:
- The pair being traded
- The lot size (standard, mini, or micro)
- Your account currency
The Formula
For pairs where USD is the quote currency (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, etc.):
Pip value = Lot size × 0.0001
- Standard lot (100,000): $10 per pip
- Mini lot (10,000): $1 per pip
- Micro lot (1,000): $0.10 per pip
For USD/JPY:
Pip value (USD) = Lot size × 0.01 ÷ USD/JPY rate
With USD/JPY at 152: standard lot = 100,000 × 0.01 ÷ 152 ≈ $6.58 per pip
Use our position size calculator to get instant pip values for any pair and lot size without doing the math.
Why Pips Matter
- Risk management: If your stop loss is 20 pips and you trade a standard lot on EUR/USD, your risk is $200 (20 × $10)
- Position sizing: To risk $100 on a 20-pip stop, trade a 0.5 mini lot (50,000 units)
- Performance tracking: Measuring gains in pips keeps your metrics broker-independent
- Prop firm rules: FTMO and TopStep often define daily loss limits in pips or percentage terms
Pip Value for Cross Pairs
For pairs that don’t include USD (EUR/GBP, GBP/JPY, etc.), first calculate the pip value in the quote currency, then convert to your account currency.
EUR/GBP example (standard lot, account in USD):
- Pip value in GBP: 100,000 × 0.0001 = £10
- Convert to USD using GBP/USD rate: £10 × 1.28 = $12.80 per pip
Quick Reference Table
| Pair | Standard Lot | Mini Lot | Micro Lot |
|---|---|---|---|
| EUR/USD | $10.00 | $1.00 | $0.10 |
| GBP/USD | $10.00 | $1.00 | $0.10 |
| USD/JPY (at 152) | ~$6.58 | ~$0.66 | ~$0.07 |
| XAU/USD (at 2345) | ~$10.00 | ~$1.00 | ~$0.10 |
