Best Forex Trading Sessions: When to Trade Sydney, Tokyo, London, and New York
The forex market operates 24 hours a day, five days a week, but not all hours are equal. Understanding the four major trading sessions and their overlaps is critical for finding the best trading opportunities.
The Four Major Sessions
Sydney Session (21:00–06:00 UTC)
- Pairs: AUD/USD, NZD/USD, AUD/JPY
- Character: Lower volatility, range-bound moves
- Best for: Range traders, early Asia preparation
Tokyo Session (23:00–08:00 UTC)
- Pairs: USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY, AUD/JPY
- Character: Technical moves, breakout setups from Asian ranges
- Best for: JPY pair traders, breakout traders
London Session (07:00–16:00 UTC)
- Pairs: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, EUR/GBP, USD/CHF
- Character: Highest liquidity, strong trends, news-driven moves
- Best for: Trend traders, breakout traders, news traders
New York Session (12:00–21:00 UTC)
- Pairs: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/CAD, XAU/USD
- Character: High volume, often trend continuation or reversal from London

Key Overlaps
London + New York (12:00–16:00 UTC)
This is the most liquid window of the day. Both European and American traders are active simultaneously:
- Tight spreads on major pairs
- Strong directional moves during US data releases
- Best window for EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and XAU/USD
Sydney + Tokyo (00:00–06:00 UTC during DST)
More moderate liquidity than London-NY, but cleaner moves on JPY and AUD pairs:
- Fewer false breakouts than London
- Good for Asian session scalping
